NJ Cannabis Brands

An overview of the major cannabis brands and operators in New Jersey's licensed market — from multistate operators to locally owned businesses.

New Jersey's cannabis market includes a mix of large multistate operators (MSOs), mid-size regional companies, and locally owned businesses. As of early 2026, the state has approximately 400 operational cannabis businesses and over 240 dispensaries. Understanding the major players helps consumers navigate the market and make informed choices about the products they purchase.

Major Multistate Operators

Several large companies operate cultivation, manufacturing, and retail facilities across New Jersey. These MSOs were among the earliest entrants to the market, many having started as medical-only operators before expanding into recreational sales when adult-use sales launched on April 21, 2022.

Curaleaf

Curaleaf is one of the largest cannabis companies in the world and operates multiple dispensary locations across New Jersey. As a vertically integrated operator, Curaleaf cultivates, manufactures, and sells its own products. Their NJ dispensaries carry a wide range of flower, edibles, vapes, concentrates, and topicals under both proprietary and partner brands.

RISE (Green Thumb Industries / GTI)

Green Thumb Industries operates retail dispensaries in New Jersey under the RISE brand. GTI is a Chicago-headquartered MSO with operations in multiple states. Their NJ locations carry GTI's house brands, including Rhythm (premium flower and vapes) and incredibles (edibles), alongside other products available in the state.

Verano

Verano Holdings operates cultivation, processing, and retail operations in New Jersey. Their dispensaries carry Verano's proprietary brands, including Verano Reserve flower and MUV product lines. Verano is a vertically integrated MSO with a national footprint.

TerrAscend

TerrAscend operates multiple dispensary locations in New Jersey under the Apothecarium brand. They are a vertically integrated company with cultivation and manufacturing operations in the state. TerrAscend's NJ presence includes both medical and recreational retail locations, and they produce a range of products including flower, vapes, and edibles under the Kind Tree brand.

Ascend Wellness Holdings

Ascend operates dispensaries and cultivation facilities in New Jersey. Their NJ retail locations are branded as Ascend dispensaries and carry both Ascend's house products and third-party brands. Ascend is a vertically integrated MSO operating in multiple eastern U.S. states.

Notable Product Brands

Kind Tree

Kind Tree is a major wholesale cannabis brand available at dispensaries throughout New Jersey. Produced by TerrAscend's cultivation and manufacturing operations, Kind Tree offers a broad product line including flower, pre-rolls, vape cartridges, and concentrates. Kind Tree products are among the most widely distributed brands in the NJ market.

Breakwater Treatment and Wellness

Breakwater is a New Jersey-based medical cannabis dispensary and cultivator that has earned a strong reputation for product quality and consistency. Originally a medical-only operator, Breakwater is known for their carefully cultivated strains and patient-focused approach. They have been a fixture of the NJ medical cannabis program since its early expansion.

Social Equity and Locally Owned Brands

One of the most distinctive features of New Jersey's cannabis market is the significant presence of diversely owned and social equity businesses. As of late 2025, approximately 70% of NJ cannabis licensees are diversely owned, with 41% located in impact zones and 16% qualifying as social equity businesses.

The CRC's licensing framework prioritizes social equity applicants and businesses owned by individuals from communities disproportionately impacted by cannabis prohibition. This means the NJ market includes a growing number of independent, locally owned brands and dispensaries — particularly among newer licensees. The Social Equity Programs page covers the CRC's equity framework in detail.

Supporting Local

When shopping at NJ dispensaries, ask your budtender which products come from locally owned or social equity businesses. Many consumers prefer to support smaller operators who are reinvesting in New Jersey communities.

Vertically Integrated vs. Wholesale

New Jersey's market structure includes both vertically integrated operators and standalone businesses:

  • Vertically integrated operators hold licenses for cultivation, manufacturing, and retail. They grow, process, and sell their own products. Most MSOs in NJ are vertically integrated.
  • Wholesale brands hold cultivation and/or manufacturing licenses and distribute their products to multiple dispensaries. Kind Tree is an example of a brand with wide wholesale distribution.
  • Independent retailers hold Class 5 Retailer licenses and purchase inventory from licensed wholesalers and distributors. These dispensaries curate product selections from multiple brands.

Satellite Dispensaries (Coming April 2026)

Beginning April 20, 2026, Class 5 Retailer licensees will be permitted to open up to 3 satellite dispensary locations each. This expansion is expected to significantly increase retail access across the state, as existing operators open additional storefronts in underserved areas. It may also give established brands a larger retail footprint.

How to Choose Products

With dozens of brands available at NJ dispensaries, choosing the right product can feel overwhelming. Here are some practical tips:

  • Ask your budtender — Dispensary staff can recommend products based on your experience level and desired effects
  • Read labels carefully — Check THC/CBD content, terpene profiles, and testing information. See our Reading NJ Labels guide.
  • Check lab results — Look for brands that provide Certificates of Analysis (COAs) via QR codes or their websites
  • Start low — If trying a new brand or product type, begin with a low dose and work your way up
  • Consider the source — Support locally owned businesses if that aligns with your values
