DO: The Right Way to Enjoy Cannabis in New Jersey
New Jersey has over 240 licensed dispensaries across all 21 counties. Verify any dispensary through the official CRC Dispensary Finder. Licensed dispensaries guarantee lab-tested, properly labeled products that meet state safety standards. Unlicensed sellers cannot guarantee product safety, accurate potency labeling, or that products are free from pesticides and contaminants.
You must be 21 or older to purchase recreational cannabis. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID — driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID from any state or country. Dispensaries and consumption lounges check ID at the door with no exceptions. There is no residency requirement — everyone is welcome.
Cash is still the safest payment method at NJ dispensaries. While many locations accept debit cards, cash ensures a smooth transaction everywhere. ATMs are available on-site at all dispensaries, but fees run $3–$5 per withdrawal. Plan ahead and bring enough cash for your purchase plus approximately 9% tax.
The legal places to consume cannabis are on private property (with the property owner's permission) and in licensed consumption lounges. This means your own home, a friend's place with their OK, a cannabis-friendly vacation rental, or one of NJ's six approved lounges in Jersey City, Newark, Atlantic City, and Merchantville.
New Jersey has approved six consumption lounges: Xena and TOSD in Jersey City, URB'N in Newark, High Rollers and SunnyTien in Atlantic City, and Gynsyng in Merchantville. Session fees are approximately $5 per 30 minutes. These are the best option for visitors without access to private property. Full lounge guide.
If you are new to cannabis, start with a low dose: 2.5–5 mg THC for edibles, or one small puff for flower. Edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to take effect. Do not take more because you "don't feel anything yet" — this is the most common mistake. Tell your budtender it is your first time and they will guide you. More at TryCannabis.org.
Keep cannabis in its original sealed packaging. When transporting in a vehicle, store it in the trunk or glove box — not in the passenger area, not in your lap. At home or a rental, keep it out of reach of children and pets, away from heat, and in a secure location.
About 63% of NJ municipalities opted out of dispensaries, but delivery is legal statewide. Services like TerpTaxi and Weedies reach every town in New Jersey. Fees range from $5–$20, often waived on orders over $50. This is especially useful at the Jersey Shore. Shore guide.
Budtenders are knowledgeable professionals who can help you find the right products. Tipping a few dollars is appreciated, just as you would tip a bartender or server — especially if they spent time walking you through options as a first-timer.
DON'T: Common Mistakes That Can Get You in Trouble
Cannabis consumption is prohibited in all public places in New Jersey. This includes streets, sidewalks, parks, beaches, boardwalks, public transit (PATH, NJ Transit, PATCO), parking lots, and any place open to or exposed to public view. Penalties include fines. "Stepping outside" or "going around the corner" is still public consumption.
Transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal crime — even between New Jersey and New York, both of which have legalized. This applies to the PATH train, Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, George Washington Bridge, Ben Franklin Bridge, and all other border crossings. Consume or dispose of your purchase before leaving New Jersey.
All airports are federal property. TSA operates under federal law, where cannabis remains a Schedule I controlled substance. Do not bring cannabis through security at Newark Liberty (EWR), Atlantic City International, or any other airport. Use it or dispose of it before your flight.
New Jersey has strict cannabis DUI laws. Driving under the influence of cannabis carries the same penalties as alcohol DUI, including license suspension, fines, and potential jail time. Use rideshare services like Uber or Lyft. Do not consume in a moving vehicle, even as a passenger.
Most New Jersey hotels prohibit cannabis use in rooms and on property. Violating hotel policy can result in cleaning surcharges, fines, and removal. Do not smoke or vape in hotel rooms, balconies, or common areas. If you are staying at a hotel, use a nearby consumption lounge instead.
Purchasing cannabis from unlicensed sources — street dealers, pop-up events, social media sellers, or any business not listed on the CRC's official registry — is illegal. Unlicensed products are not tested for pesticides, heavy metals, mold, or accurate THC labeling. You have no recourse if something goes wrong. Use only CRC-licensed dispensaries.
Providing cannabis to anyone under 21 is a serious criminal offense. Adults may purchase and possess cannabis for their own use only. Providing cannabis to a minor can result in felony charges. If children are present, store all products securely out of their sight and reach.
Many dispensaries prohibit photography and video recording inside their stores for security and privacy reasons. Always ask before taking photos. This is both a courtesy to other customers and often a house rule.
